Carla Borrego (née Williams; born 11 November 1983) is a Jamaican international basketball and netball player. Borrego grew up playing netball in Jamaica, but gave up the sport to play women's basketball, first at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale before gaining a scholarship to the University of Miami.[1] Before her move to the United States in 2004, Borrego was a member of the Jamaican national netball team at the 2003 Netball World Championships in Kingston, where she was the second most prolific shooter of the tournament.[2][3] Her studies in the United States prevented her from playing for Jamaica in the 2007 Netball World Championships.[4]
She currently plays domestic netball for Waulgrovians,[5] and for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Australasian ANZ Championship.[6] Borrego also made herself available for selection in the Jamaican national team for tours in 2010.[7] But later that year, Borrego signalled her intention to become an Australian citizen, with the possibility of joining the Australian national team for the 2011 Netball World Championships in Singapore.[8]
In 2011, in the fifth round against the Firebirds, Borrego played at the Goal Keeper position for the very first time. She played at that position again in round 11 against the Magic. After the ANZ Championship, Borrego was invited to the Diamond's selection camp as training partner, but is ineligible to be in the Diamonds squad. As a result, Borrego will not compete in the 2011 World Netball Championship as she aims to obtain Australian citizenship and be eligible to be in the Diamonds squad in the future.
